What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing (sometimes called "sensory integration" or SI) is a term that refers to a brain process that occurs in all of us within our nervous system. It allows us, often without conscious thought, to take in information through our senses, organize it (process) and make a plan to produce a meaningful response to interact with our environment (integrate the process) with ease and comfort.
For most children, sensory processing develops through ordinary childhood activities. Children must be able to organize sensory information to function in daily activities, in the classroom, on the playground and in relationships.
